Minimum Age
14 years of agePrerequisites
- Students must be at least 14 years old.
- Students ages 14 to 18 must possess a proper work permit from their school district.
- Work permits must be turned in on the first day of training. Earlier submissions are acceptable.
Required Online Components
During this course, students will complete the following components virtually. Web links are located in the student registration course offerings section on the website.
- NIMS ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
- NIMS ICS-700: National Incident Management System
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Traffic Incident Management (TIM)
- Enrollment into the ACADIS platform
Required Text
- A Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills, 5th Edition, Jones & Bartlett student manual will be issued at the beginning of the class and may be used throughout the entry program.
Required Equipment
- Note-taking materials
- Full PPE, including helmet, gloves, turnout coat and pants, boots, protective hood, ear plugs, and safety glasses or goggles
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, for inspection, care, and refill only; not for IDLH entry
- One piece of 1/2-inch utility rope for knot tying, 15 feet in length
Important Certification Testing Note
This course is the first module of the PA State Fire Academy’s Entry Level Fire Training Curriculum.
Throughout this program, students will have the opportunity to test for NFPA Pro Board certification for Hazardous Materials Awareness and the new NFPA 1010 Fireground Support certification.

Course Description
This 48-hour entry-level course provides new firefighters with a solid foundation in the core principles of the fire service. It introduces the history, mission, organizational structure, and culture of the profession while emphasizing the importance of health, safety, and professional conduct.
Students will begin developing essential skills through instruction in fundamental fireground concepts including water supply, ropes and knots, fire hose, SCBA care and maintenance, fire extinguishers, and fire behavior.
